Tomorrow (Aug.21), Sandy Weaver’s property in Stono Ferry will be auctioned for unpaid homeowners association assessments. In 2008, Weaver was informed that, Stono Ferry Homeowners Association had filed a lien along with a notice of foreclosure but wasn’t aware the case had progressed to a foreclosure sale.
According to a Charleston Regional Business Journal analysis, they found hundreds of foreclosure cases filed by associations since 1993, sometimes for as little as $300 in unpaid assessments. Homeowners associations aren’t regulated by any state agency, and lawmakers have tried to pass legislation to provide oversight but those efforts have failed.
How do you feel about regulation of HOA? Is it necessary? Is it fair Weaver’s property is for sale without her knowing?
