Steps must be taken to ensure the end of homelessness for survivors of domestic violence.
Check out this op-ed “End the Violence, Ensure Housing for All” by Maria Foscarinis of The Huffington Post.
Some facts taken from the piece:
- Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness - for women, in particular, as well as unaccompanied youth.
- In 2011 13 percent of homeless women surveyed cited domestic violence or abuse as the primary cause of their homelessness (via the U.S. Conference of Mayors).
- Forty-three percent of unaccompanied homeless youth report leaving home after being beaten by a caretaker, and 25 percent report that a caretaker requested sexual activity (via the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty).
